Broadway is one of the most iconic stages that we have in the world. It showcases many of the best, most influential theatrical performances ever created, such as The Phantom of the Opera and Hamilton. It has been home to many different musicals and plays that people from all ages and backgrounds have enjoyed. But despite the platform that Broadway provides, it has historically lacked representation. The need for more diversity on Broadway is crucial. Broadway should have more representation because it reflects the diversity of our society and provides opportunities for underrepresented artists. It also creates a more inclusive environment and broadens our understanding and appreciation of different cultures and perspectives.

Broadway is a reflection of our society. The world, and the United States in particular, is a very diverse place, home to many people from different cultures and backgrounds. It is important that Broadway reflects this diversity and showcases them. Whitewashing is very common on Broadway. A study found that only 35 percent of all roles are going to minority actors according to The New York Times

Even though musicals like “Hamilton,” “On Your Feet!” and “The Color Purple” have provided more opportunities for African-American, with 23 percent of all roles went to African-American actors, Asian-American performers dropped to 4 percent of all roles.

More representation on Broadway creates more opportunities for underrepresented artists. Broadway provides a stage where artists can showcase their talents and receive the recognition they deserve. However, historically, Broadway has not provided equal opportunities for all artists. It has been a predominantly white industry, with 60 percent of white actors according to CBC News, and many underrepresented groups have struggled to break into the field. By increasing representation on Broadway, we can give these artists a chance to shine and be recognized for their talents.

Representation also leads to more diverse stories being told. Different cultures and communities have their unique stories that deserve to be told. However, a lack of representation has meant that many of these stories have gone unheard. By giving underrepresented artists the opportunity to perform on Broadway, we can ensure that diverse stories are being told and shared with audiences. This can help broaden our understanding and appreciation of different cultures and perspectives, leading to a more inclusive and accepting society.

“Having more representation in Broadway makes me feel more connected with the story and feel like minorities like me are actually being noted,” said junior Damanpreet Kaur.

Having more representation can also inspire future generations. When young people see themselves represented on stage, they can be inspired to pursue a career in the arts. It can also help break down barriers and challenge stereotypes. By increasing representation on Broadway, we can help create a more diverse and inclusive environment, inspiring future generations to celebrate and embrace diversity.

“More representation on Broadway makes me feel more represented and I am more willing to watch it” said by freshman Simeon Chen.

Thus, we need to have more representation on Broadway as it is essential due to a variety of different aspects. It reflects the diversity of our society, provides opportunities for underrepresented artists, creates a more inclusive environment, broadens our understanding and appreciation of different cultures and perspectives, and inspires future generations. It is vital that we continue to strive for greater representation on Broadway and ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to showcase their talents on this iconic stage.
